Back in the day, air travel was reserved for the rich, since airline fares were prohibitively expensive and effectively shut out the middle class. But celebrities flew on the airlines and in private jets regularly during the Golden Age of Travel as they went to and from movie sets or attended premiers and events around the world. This actor, who was famous in the 1930s and 1940s, was best known for his roles in swashbuckling movies and playing what many consider the definitive Robin Hood in the 1937 film "The Adventures of Robin Hood." ;
8. Clark Gable and Carole Lombard
The popular Hollywood pair was preparing to board an American Airlines Douglas DC-3 Skysleeper flight in the 1930s. Gable was known for his iconic role in "Gone With the Wind." Lombard and her mother died on January 16, 1942, after their TWA aircraft crashed in the mountains southwest of Las Vegas. ;
9. Amelia Earhart and Laura Houghtaling Ingalls
