Air Travel Assistance - First
Oct 30th 2011, 10:01

Air travel is certainly not a one-type or size fits all. At the airport I get to see an incredible range of travelers - from families to sports groups, from unaccompanied minors to women in full abayas, there really isn't a cookie-cutter shaped passenger. Given this, airlines do have plans on how to assist passengers who may need it for the air travel experience.

Fear of Flying - First Time Flyer
The first thing that comes to mind regarding passengers who may require assistance are those who are afraid of flying, or first time flyers. It is okay to be afraid of flying, there is certainly a loss of control when you are sitting in a narrow seat, 30,000 feet above the earth, and the plane is shaking through an area of turbulence. There are courses for fear of flying, and many of them boast a solid success rate. I wasn't always the best flyer as i despised turbulence, and my method though unconventional, was to learn how to fly in order to overcome my fears (there certainly is nothing like bouncing around in turbulent air in a two-seater Cessna).

If you are afraid to fly, let airline staff know. At the gate, and even at check-in, I have done on the spot talks with nervous flyers to help them feel a little more at ease. You can often find a sympathetic flight attendant who will come by every so often to check in on you.

Again, there are fear of flying courses available. As another option, you can seek medical advice regarding prescribed medications to help deal with the anxiety of flying.

Do not feel afraid to ask questions. Yes, there are some surly airline employees, but the majority of those who work for airlines love to travel and do have a modicum of compassion for those who are afraid to fly. Years back, British Airways was one of the airlines that pioneered a project where employees would volunteer to fly with passengers who required assistance; dozens of airlines such as Air Canada operate flights that take underprivileged or ill children to places like Disney World, all on volunteered time. These are people who have a passion for people and travel so ask us! I often liken turbulence to hitting a pothole, or I ask a passenger to try and envision it as being rocked to sleep on a long flight (doesn't always work, but the effort is to diffuse the fear of the unknown).

Bringing along items of comfort may also help. Tranquil music on your MP3 player, or a really great pillow and fleece blanket can sometimes help take the edge off of fear. A tennis ball can be great for squeezing in your hand to relieve tension; plus it has the added bonus of keeping your carpal tunnel engaged so it can act to prevent swelling in your wrist and fingers during a long flight.

Sometimes reading up on weather conditions can help. Sources such as the FAA's Flight Delay Information - Air Traffic Control System Command Center can be really useful. Again, removing the unknown elements of flight can often alleviate a fearful flyer's anxieties.

Ultimately, when it comes to a fear of flying, know that you are not the only one who feels this way. I have had passengers faint in front of me, hyperventilate, and cry - one sees the whole range of emotions and autonomic responses working at an airport - there are those who are simply terrified of flying. However, with reassurance and preparation many do overcome the fear of flying and then can experience the world from all different time zones.

Food for Flights
Oct 30th 2011, 10:01

Dips that work for vegetables or crackers are pretty useful. I either make a spinach dip or an onion soup-based dip, or if I am not at home I will often hit the grocery store and pick up a ranch dressing. After the dips/dressing is ready, I dole it into small plastic containers that hold 2-3oz of food.

Flights to Antarctica
Oct 29th 2011, 10:01

The time of year for seeing Antarctica is during the summer in the Southern Hemisphere. This usually means flights in late November until January. Few flights are offered, and they are expensive, but for the air traveler without a budget limit, and who wants to see all the continents, then a flight to Antarctica can make it happen.

Few flights to Antarctica are open to the general flying public. Plus, you will be looking at a pretty big price tag. These are the flights to Antarctica:

Antarctica Sightseeing Flights - Day trip from Australia on a Qantas 747. About four hours is spent flying over Antarctica. Prices range from $999 to $5499 Australian Dollars. Boarding is available out of Sydney or Melbourne.

One and two day trips to Antarctica - Several flight options ranging from $2500 - $3500 USD from Punta Arenas, Chile to King George Island.

Antarctic Logistics - If you are looking to land and trek Antarctica, and are open to spending anywhere from $15,000 to $60,000 then you can experience this continent by flight and foot.

The facts on bringing car seat
Oct 28th 2011, 10:01

It isn't a requirement yet, but more and more government civil aviation authorities are pushing for some form of mandatory use of approved car seats for infants and toddlers under 2. There are certainly safety issues if you bring your child under 2 on board as a "lap baby". Concerns over turbulence and other safety issues with flights have led numerous pediatric associations to encourage the use of a CRS for children under 2. The American Academy of Pediatrics is just one of the organizations that has issued statements regarding the use of a CRS during flights.

Currently, you do have the choice between carrying a child under two years old as a lap baby on almost every airline, but if you choose to purchase a seat, or chance it and try for an unoccupied seat for your child, the question then becomes can you bring the car seat you already own on board.

Car seats are often referred to as child restraint systems (CRS) by government agencies. For a CRS to be used on a flight it has to pass the regulations set by the country where the airline originates. Most industrialized nations have similar requirements regarding the specifics for child restraint systems when used during a flight.

Tips for using a car seat during a flight

  • To be able to use your car seat you will be looking for a label that states: "This restraint is certified for use in motor vehicles and aircraft." Similar labels will be found on car seats in Canada, the U.K., etc..
  • Check the width of the car seat. The FAA mentions 16 inches as the maximum width so that it will fit most airline seats.
  • Some airlines offer discounted airfares for infants occupying a seat, but not all. For airlines that do offer discounted airfares for infants, discounts tend to range from 10-50% less than an adult's airfare.
  • If you do not purchase a seat for your child under 2, the airline is not required to give you an empty seat. It may not always be easy to pick a flight that isn't full. However, mid-week and late morning or early afternoon flights often give you a better chance at extra empty seats on an aircraft. And you can always ask at the gate. When I see that an infant is traveling, as a gate agent I try to check the flight loads and seat chart for a row with extra empty seats.
  • A CRS should be placed in a window seat, but on an aircraft with three banks of seats per row, there is the possibility of using a middle seat in the middle bank. It is basically about leaving the aisles clear.
  • The FAA, as well as many of its international counterparts advise that children under 20 pounds be placed in a rear-facing CRS, and from 20 to 40 pounds use a forward-facing child restraint.

Paper Vs. Electronic Tickets
Oct 26th 2011, 10:01

There are two types of tickets that you'll encounter when using an airline, namely the paper ticket and the electronic ticket (also known as ticket-less travel). Paper tickets are quickly being painted with dinosaur strokes - they somehow seem less current. Before weighing in on such perceptions, it is important to look at the advantages and disadvantages of these two types of tickets.

Paper tickets are so named because the flight coupons (the pieces of paper that contain the exact flight information and are labeled as flight coupons) are in paper form. With an electronic ticket, this information is held within the airline's reservation system, and is indicated as electronic tickets when you check in. The passenger traveling on an electronic ticket is given a copy of the itinerary, and the contract of carriage. These documents are not a ticket but serve as an indication that you have an electronic one. With an electronic ticket, you do not have the physical ticket in hand. Knowing that paper and electronic tickets are different isn't really enough though; it is important to know what the positives and negatives are as well.

Paper tickets are particularly useful if your flight is canceled because of a mechanical or another airline-related problem as opposed to a weather issue. Certainly if a cancellation is weather related, you are stuck. However, if it isn't and you have a paper ticket, you may have a world of options that you possibly haven't considered. If you have a paper ticket on a major airline and are flying out of an airport where another major airline also flies to your destination, having a paper ticket can serve to your advantage. If your flight is canceled, you can ask an agent at another airline whether they will accept your ticket (more difficult to do if there is more than one terminal that airlines fly from to your destination). Often the other airline will, and you are now ahead of those on electronic tickets. You see, with an electronic ticket, because you do not have a physical ticket, you are more at the mercy of the airline you are booked on. And in the case of a non-weather related cancellation, you will be put on the next available flight on that same airline, even if it is hours later.

Paper tickets can also be advantageous in situations that don't involve cancellations. Let's say that you are checking the schedules to your destination and discover a more convenient time on another airline. With a paper ticket, you may just be able to switch airlines, particularly if it is a domestic ticket (and not on a charter airline). If it is an international destination, don't bother, as the rules of international tickets vary a great deal, whereas domestic ones are often incredibly similar. I'll demonstrate by example. A very unspoken rule at a major airline was to accept tickets from other airlines if the passengers showed up at check in. It was a large airport with numerous terminals, and a number of airlines served the exact same route. So agents were instructed to scoop the passenger, which meant accepting the passenger's ticket from another airline and taking (scooping) some of the other airline's profit. This does not occur on a consistent level at every airport, but it does happen and could serve to your benefit if you have a paper ticket.

Face Massage Techniques
Oct 25th 2011, 10:01

Beyond the curve of your eyebrows, at each side of your face you will feel an indentation, almost like a hole. These are your temples, and where the next bit of pressure will be applied, again with the gentle pressure you used in step 3.

Use your thumbs or your index fingers and simply apply and hold pressure over these two points for at least 30 seconds.

It is no surprise that people often start rubbing their temples when they feel the pressure and discomfort for a headache. In fact, the point along the temples is often used for the treatment of headaches.

Viagra May Treat Jet Lag
Oct 24th 2011, 10:01

Viagra - I doubt many people would connect this prescription drug with treating jetlag. But, sure enough, studies have been done to see how effective Viagra is in reducing the symptoms and treating jet lag.

Reports of Viagra as a possible jet lag remedy have started popping up with greater frequency. The brand name of the drug sildenafil is usually thought of as synonymous with erectile dysfunction issues, but somehow it morphed into a potential jet lag cure.

It wouldn't be the first time the drug took on a different use, as it was originally prescribed for heart issues like high blood pressure. The recent study touting the potential benefits of Viagra in combatting jet lag saw a 50% faster recovery rate from jet lag symptoms - but this only worked for flights going in an eastward direction. The study also showed that Viagra helped reset circadian rhythms faster (sleep - wake cycle) using hamsters and measuring their recovery by how quickly they hopped back onto their exercise wheels.

It's an interesting study, possibly controversial, but if you want to read about it, it has been documented by the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

Sildenafil accelerates reentrainment of circadian rhythms after advancing light schedules from Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America.

It is important to note that the drug only worked in conjunction with light therapy, and only in one time direction - the equivalent to flying eastbound.

Revised Airport Security
Oct 24th 2011, 10:01

Security measures at airports have been revised again. To quell the confusion, I've compiled a list of items now permitted on board flights departing from the United States and Canada.

The TSA has relaxed its list of prohibited items and now passengers are permitted to bring limited quantities of liquids and gels in carry on baggage. The following list applies to flights originating in the United States. The items will be permitted as long as the following conditions are met:

  • Individual containers must be 3oz or less
  • Containers do not need to be labeled
  • All containers must fit in a 1 quart, clear, resealable bag
  • The clear, resealable bag must be removed from the carry on and put separately in a bin to be screened
  • Existing exemptions such as medications still apply

Airport and Airplane movies...
Oct 24th 2011, 10:01

According to many movies made about airports and airplanes, a disaster is always waiting in the wings. Thankfully, day to day workings in the airlines are far less dramatic. Here are a few of the cinematic interpretations of airports and airplanes for those interested in the drama or thriller genres.

The original (or if not, the widely watched!) air disaster movie. This is the movie that helped spawn a generation of spoofs, namely the 'Airplane' series. Dean Martin stars as a pilot.

Flights Canceled, Delayed and
Oct 23rd 2011, 10:01

How has Rule 240 changed?
Because Rule 240 deals with cancellations and delays, it is probably the best known of any 'rules' pertaining to the airline industry. What makes defining Rule 240 so troublesome is that since the deregulation of the U.S. airline industry Rule 240 is not a federal requirement. Therefore, if the airline has submitted the rule in their respective contracts (also conditions) of carriage (the ticket is a contractual agreement that an airline and passenger enter regarding the transport of a passenger) then the airline has a Rule 240, but it doesn't have to.

A common misconception is that all airlines are required to have a Rule 240, but they do not. And airlines have different versions of Rule 240, making it even more difficult for passengers to know their rights in the event of a delay or cancellation that has been caused by the airline.

What is considered the airline's fault regarding delays and cancellations?

  • mechanical problems
  • late arrival of an aircraft
  • pilots or other crew that are not at the aircraft on the time
  • other factors that are within an airline's control

What details might a Rule 240 include?
