Top 10 Airlines in Latin Ameri
Apr 30th 2012, 11:06

Airlines in Latin America may not carry as many passengers as airlines in Europe, and North America, but there are plenty of airlines serving all parts of Latin America. This is the top 10 based on how many passengers chose to fly on them.

1. TAM Brazil

The default for their website is in Portuguese, and sometimes it just won't let you switch over to English.

2. Varig

Brazil's former flagship carrier, which has faced stiff competition from low cost Brazilian airlines, is leaving Star Alliance and joining oneworld.

3. Aeromexico

Aeromexico is a member of the Sky Team Alliance.

4. Mexicana

From their website - "Mexicana de Aviación began operations more than 85 years ago, and it is therefore the fourth airline with the most aerospace tradition in the world."

5. GOL

This Brazilian low cost carrier is booming, cracking the top 5 airlines in Latin America based on passenger traffic

6. LAN Airlines

LAN has grown into an airline that is now not only the flagship carrier for Chile, but also for several other South American countries.

7. Avianca

This Colombian airline is one of the oldest in the world and has outlasted several other Colombian upstarts such as ACES.

8. Aerolineas Argentinas

This Argentinian airline is also a mainstay of South American airlines.

9. Aviacsa

This airline primarily serves domestic destinations within Mexico.

10. TACA

This Latin American airline has hubs in both Central and South America and often is able to offer great deals to countries such as Honduras, Peru, and Guatemala.

My Passport Was Stolen
Apr 30th 2012, 11:06

My passport was stolen a little more than five years ago. It happened at an airport in North America. When you hear stories about a stolen passport you automatically think that it happens somewhere else, somewhere less developed, and most certainly not at home. But here I was, I had just returned from a trip to Eastern Europe, and passed through customs. I don't remember the exact moment that my passport was stolen, but in an instant it went from being loosely held in my hand (having just finished speaking with a customs officer and declaring the goods I had purchased), to being gone.

At first I thought that I had passed it over to one of the friends that I had traveled with on the trip. Minutes later I realized that I was the only one missing a passport. I went numb. I chastised myself, angry that I could let this happen, that I didn't take enough care with my most important identity document. And I moved to disbelief, calling the airport's lost and found incessantly over the course of the following days. But my passport was gone. In my home country, and the airport I worked at, my passport was stolen. Here I was, a seasoned traveler and airline worker, and in the jet lag of returning home, and not paying enough attention after customs, my passport was stolen.

I was set to travel to Southeast Asia only weeks later, so I almost immediately filed a report with the police. I next went to the Passport Office to apply for a replacement passport, and to report my previous passport as lost or stolen. After presenting all of the necessary documents to prove my identity, I completed my application and soon received a new passport without incident. I worried that someone might try to use my stolen passport, but I had filed reports and assumed that I would be contacted if there were any further problems. The fact that I was able to travel on the replacement passport for the next four and a half years eased me into believing that there were no problems with the old passport. I would soon find out that I was sadly mistaken.

Low Cost, Budget Airlines NA
Apr 30th 2012, 11:06

A number of low cost airlines have sprung up in North America as an alternative to mainstream, long-established airlines. As services decrease on the traditional, scheduled carriers, these low cost options seem even more attractive.

Southwest Airlines

This is the low cost airline that other airlines - both legacy carriers and other low cost airlines - often try to emulate. Southwest Airlines is not just known for great fares, but for customer service.

Westjet

This Canadian low cost airline flies across Canada, to the United States and now to points in the Caribbean. Westjet is also loosely allied with Southwest Airlines.

AirTran Airways

AirTran is a low cost airline that serves dozens of US markets.

JetBlue Airways

JetBlue continues to be well-ranked among US airlines for customer service, as well as having a broad range of routes across the United States and the Caribbean.

Virgin America

In its short tenure as an airline, Virgin America is known for its innovation with WiFi, and inflight options, and for good customer service.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines has been likened to Europe`s Ryanair as not just a low cost airline, but no frills one as well.

Air Transat

Air Transat is one of Canada's charter airlines serving sun destinations and Europe.

Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines has its main hub in Denver and serves several cities in the United States.

Sun Country Airlines

Sun Country is based in Minnesota with several destinations in the United States, and flies to Mexico.

Sunwing Airlines

This charter airline travels from cities in Canada to Southern destinations.

Flights to Antarctica
Apr 30th 2012, 11:06

The time of year for seeing Antarctica is during the summer in the Southern Hemisphere. This usually means flights in late November until January. Few flights are offered, and they are expensive, but for the air traveler without a budget limit, and who wants to see all the continents, then a flight to Antarctica can make it happen.

Few flights to Antarctica are open to the general flying public. Plus, you will be looking at a pretty big price tag. These are the flights to Antarctica:

Antarctica Sightseeing Flights - Day trip from Australia on a Qantas 747. About four hours is spent flying over Antarctica. Prices range from $999 to $5499 Australian Dollars. Boarding is available out of Sydney or Melbourne.

One and two day trips to Antarctica - Several flight options ranging from $2500 - $3500 USD from Punta Arenas, Chile to King George Island.

Antarctic Logistics - If you are looking to land and trek Antarctica, and are open to spending anywhere from $15,000 to $60,000 then you can experience this continent by flight and foot.

Take Comfort Inflight
Apr 29th 2012, 11:06

A long flight in an economy seat is one of the prospects that air travelers tend to dread. Here are a few tips to try and make it more comfortable.
  • Place one of the provided pillows between your lower back (just below your ribs) and the seat. Helps ease back soreness.
  • Pack your own neck pillow, or scrunch one provided by the airline to support your neck.
  • Do periodic stretches. Place your hands on the armrests and slowly twist your torso to loosen your upper body.
  • When the seatbelt light is off, stretch your legs by walking down the aisle of the aircraft with a bit more bend in your knees.
  • Limber up swollen feet by slowly turning your feet at the ankle in circular patterns. Should help maintain good blood flow. Flexing and extending your feet from the ankle can help as well.
  • Moisturize hands and face with heavy/lasting creams or petroleum jelly (don't do this one if your skin is naturally on the oily side). The air is very dry inflight and thin moisturizers wear or rub off.
  • Keep the air vent above you open. Dampen a facecloth, place it over your face, and aim the air vent at the cloth. Helps with dryness. I also like to dilute an essential oil like lavender with water and pour it into a mini spray bottle, then dampen the cloth with that. A more loosely woven material like cheesecloth is also a good option as you can throw it away at the end of your flight.
  • Bring lots of chewing gum for changes in air pressure. Ears don't always pop just during take-off and landing times, but during the flight. Helps with the nerves as well!
  • Wear loose fitting, slip on shoes. Feet swell, and if you take shoes off at any point in a flight, a shoe that just fits can be painful to put back on.
  • Wear loose fitting clothes. Inflight dining and drinking may leave you feeling bloated.
  • If you are wearing pantyhose or tights make sure that you moisturize your legs well. The dryness inflight can make legs feel very itchy in tights or pantyhose if you don't.
  • Try and drink as many non alcoholic beverages as possible. Perhaps bring an extra bottle of water with you.
  • When traveling with a broken arm, or toe, etc., make sure that your doctor has provided you with adequate pain medication. The compression inflight can make a broken bone feel excruciatingly painful.
  • If you are concerned about blood clots and the much publicized economy class syndrome (deep vein thrombosis) consider taking an aspirin before flying as it has blood thinning properties.
  • Try not to keep your hair in a ponytail, or use hair clips in the back of your head. These will dig into your head after a few hours of the rigid seat backs.

Face Massage Techniques
Apr 29th 2012, 11:06

Finish the massage by repeating the general strokes from the top of the forehead to the chin, and sweeping your fingers off the chin at the end of each stroke.

Your hands are almost fingertip to fingertip across from each other - with each set of four fingers beginning at the center of the forehead gently stroke down and across following the outside frame of the face.

Slowly, from forehead to temples to cheeks along the jaw, and bringing the fingertips together under the chin, then sweeping the fingers off the face and beginning again at the center of the forehead.

Repeat at least 10 times.

Find the Best Airfare - Tips
Apr 28th 2012, 11:05

Getting the best airfare depends on many factors - time of year, destination and length of stay are just a few of the major ones. The formula for getting the best price for your flights can indeed seem complicated. Although the challenging task of getting a great ticket price likely won't change, there are a number of strategies that may help in your pursuit for the best airfare possible.

1. Finding the Low Season in High Season

If you need to travel over a holiday period, ask if any of the days are considered low season. If you are willing to travel on these dates you will likely save some money.

2. Flights During a Holiday Period Require Planning

For travel during holiday periods, it is very risky and potentially astronomically expensive to try and book at the last minute. Flights will fill up in advance.

3. Before Sunrise, After Sunset - Time of Day Discounts

The time of day that you embark on your air travels can sometimes affect the price of your airfare and depending on your travel plans there may be times of day that are less expensive.

4. Some Days are Cheaper than Others

The day of the week that you travel can certainly affect the price you pay for your ticket - some days simply tend to be cheaper than others for flights.

5. More Time Can Mean More Money - Length of Stay

The length of your trip can affect your ticket price. If you are planning a long trip that reaches beyond the maximum stay of a very discounted ticket, you will likely fork over more money for your air travels.

TSA Secure Flight
Apr 28th 2012, 11:05

The TSA has now implemented its Secure Flight program, meaning there have been changes to identification requirements for passengers.
  • What is the TSA's Secure Flight program?
It is an initiative to streamline the process of matching / clearing passenger details with the Watch List / No Fly List. According to the TSA it not only shifts the responsibility of gathering passenger data from the airlines to the TSA, but also "...satisfies a key recommendation of the 9/11 Commission, and congressional requirements from the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 and the 9/11 Commission Act signed into law in 2007."
  • What passenger information is required by the TSA and its Secure Flight program?
The TSA requires airlines to collect and share the following information with the TSA -
    Full Name
    Itinerary
    Date of Birth
    Gender
    Redress Number (optional)
  • Why do I need to provide this information?
To allow the TSA to perform watch list matching.
  • When do the identification requirements go into effect?
Domestic airlines must collect the full name of passengers as of May 15, 2009.
Domestic airlines must collect the date of birth and gender as of August 15, 2009 for domestic flights.
Domestic airlines must collect the full name, date of birth, and gender for international flights as of October 31, 2009.
According to the TSA, "For the near future, small differences between the passenger’s ID and the passenger’s reservation information, such as the use of a middle initial instead of a full middle name or no middle name/initial at all, should not cause a problem for the passenger."
  • What is the Secure Flight program supposed to do?
    Identify known and suspected terrorists
Prevent passengers on the No Fly List from boarding a plane
Ensure that passengers on the Selectee List are subjected to extra screening to determine if they should be permitted to fly
  • What is a Redress Number?
The TSA explains the redress process in the following way: "Redress is an opportunity for passengers who believe they have been improperly or unfairly delayed or prohibited from boarding an aircraft to seek resolution and avoid future delays. The affected passengers often have the same or a similar name to someone on the watch list. The DHS Traveler Redress Inquiry Program (TRIP) provides a one-stop shop for passengers seeking redress. Secure Flight uses the results of the redress process in its watch list matching process to help prevent future delays for misidentified passengers."

Part 3: Travel Tips for the Un

A few tips for the child traveling alone:

  • Traveling on one's own for the first time can be both nerve-racking and frightening. Prepare a child for the upcoming travel by explaining the details of the trip. Understanding the process will alleviate stress for everyone.
  • A good night's sleep always makes it easier to face the prospect of travel, so try to make sure that the child is well rested.
  • For longer flights, it is a good idea to order a children's meal. If he/she is a fussy eater pack some snacks that will appeal to the child traveling alone.
  • Children often feel better when they have something familiar with them. Pack a favorite item in the child's carry-on so that he/she will feel more comfortable with traveling alone.
  • There are the inevitable delays, so it is always good to pack a book, activity pad, hand held game, etc.
  • Place a brief medical history and a list of phone contacts in the child's carry-on bag. Advise the airline representative of where it can be found. Such information is extremely helpful in case of an emergency. Calling cards are also useful to pack in the child's carry-on
  • Make certain that the person meeting the child at the point of arrival is aware of all the rules involved in the unaccompanied minor process - bringing photo identification, meeting area, etc..
  • If you are sending a child unaccompanied, it is always a good idea to pack a bit of money for snacks or drinks either on board a flight or during the waiting time between connections.

Face Massage Techniques
Apr 26th 2012, 11:06

Now that you have gently massaged the muscles along the jaw, it is time to stretch them out. The motion is very similar to the motion you did along the maxillary sinuses.

Take your thumbs and place them on the chin. Rest your fingers along each side of your face. Your fingers should basically be touching your ears, or somewhere near there. And although your palms will not be touching the face, they are faced towards the nose and cheeks. In this position, your elbows are likely to stick out a bit so be aware of your seatmates.

From the chin you gently push the thumbs in and drag them slowly along the skin, up the jaw line until you reach the joint (TMJ, or temporomandibular joint). As you pull your thumbs upward, your hands will move away from each other. It is almost the sensation of a smile pulling your muscles upward.

Apr 26th 2012, 11:06

Southwest Airlines has both increased their fee, and made it easier to book unaccompanied minor travel - you can now book travel for children traveling as unaccompanied minors online. There is a lot of paperwork that goes along with booking young travelers as unaccompanied minors, so having a feature where you can do so online could be a huge timesaver at the airport.

I know from having worked at check-in, it can take anywhere from 5 minutes to about 20 minutes to fill out all the forms in person, so being able to do this from home instead of the airport seems a huge bonus.

With Southwest Airlines, children 5 to 11 traveling without an accompanying passenger who is 12 or older must travel as unaccompanied minors (UMs). UMs may only travel on nonstop flights, connecting flights are not allowed.

Southwest Airlines' Teresa Laraba, Senior Vice President of Customer Services spoke about the impetus for the online booking tool for unaccompanied minor travel - "During a recent audit, we identified several opportunities, including the creation of an online booking tool for UMs and an enhancement in the Employee training that comes along with handling our young passengers who are flying solo."

Now to the fee hike (which, even with the increase, is still lower than several major airlines). The UM service charge has increased from $25 to $50 each way.
